IMS Global Learning Consortium Announces Memorandum of Understanding with Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS)
Organizations Agree to Cooperate to Enhance e-Learning in the Republic of Korea and the Asia-Pacific Region
Vancouver, BC - 17 April 2007 - The IMS Global Learning Consortium (IMS GLC) and the Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS) today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in research, development, and deployment of e-Learning standards toward higher levels of e-Learning service in Korea and internationally.
"We are entering a new phase of the application of technology to enhance and support teaching and learning - requiring a new era of content and systems interoperability standards that support collaborative learning, assessment, and integration of content formats" commented Rob Abel, Chief Executive Officer IMS GLC. "I have been very impressed with the leadership that KERIS has provided in making use of standards and developing and deploying innovative approaches in the use of technology to address significant learning challenges."
The memorandum of understanding addresses cooperation in three areas: developing Korean standards for e-Learning, pursuing international standardization of e-Learning, and active use of the new Common Cartridge e-Learning standards to support higher quality e-Learning. KERIS and IMS GLC have agreed to work together for the sustainable and mutual benefit of both organizations.
"e-Learning and electronic distribution of research information are cornerstones of the national competitiveness of Korea or any nation," indicates Dr. Dae-Joon Hwang, President of KERIS. "Over the past year we have been interacting with IMS GLC extensively and have come to believe that the latest work occurring in IMS, including Common Cartridge, Learning Tools Interoperability, Question and Test Interoperability, and Access for All, will enable Korea to make new and sustainable progress toward our goals."
Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS)
The KERIS is a national institution which specializes in enhancing the effective use of ICT in education and research. Established in 1999, KERIS supports the establishment and implementation of ICT in education policies, while conducting research and analysis and providing quality education and research information services. According to the ICT in Education Master Plans I~III of Korea, KERIS has undertaken various initiatives to improve teaching and learning in primary and secondary education: 1) National Teaching-Learning Center-EDUNET, 2) Cyber Home Learning System, 3) Digital Library System, 4) Educational Resource Sharing System, 5) National Education Information System for effective online educational administration, 6) National standardization of educational metadata and quality assurance system.
