Learning Impact 2008 is IMS Global Learning Consortium's annual conference that brings together the world's leading creators, vendors, users, and buyers of learning technology to participate in program tracks focused on the latest innovations in learning systems, digital learning content, the learning enterprise, and open technologies. Presenters answer a key challenge question designed to inform the attendees on the state of innovation and best practices.

The Summit on Global Learning Industry Challenges is a gathering of industry leaders to introduce and debate ideas on issues impacting the growth of learning worldwide. This is a unique and highly direct conversation for the purpose of illuminating the key business challenges facing the learning industry. The Summit is facilitated by a focused set of highly interactive panel sessions with audience participation.

Dr. Rob Abel, Ed.D. is the Chief Executive Officer of IMS Global Learning Consortium, the world’s leading nonprofit member consortium developing, supporting, and advocating learning technology standards and best practices. Under Rob’s leadership IMS Global has introduced the Learning Impact program, which is setting new benchmarks for high impact applications of technology in support of learning worldwide. Rob is a recognized expert on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for learning, as well as an education industry researcher focused on the impact of education in society. As Senior Vice President at Collegis (now SunGard Higher Education), the leading provider of ICT services to U.S. higher education, he was responsible for online and academic services provided to over 60 U.S. institutions. As Senior Director at Oracle Education he was a leader and innovator in the development of online learning architectures and related standards, including the Reusable Content Object (RCO) strategy. Rob is a member of the IEEE, ACM, ASTD, ISTE, and American Educational Research Association. Rob holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Change from Fielding Graduate University, a Masters degree in Management from Stanford, a Masters degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Southern California, and a Baccalaureate degree in Computational Physics from Carnegie Mellon University. His articles, commentary, and research have been featured by Educause Review, Educause Quarterly, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Greentree Gazette, Campus Technology, The League for Innovation, University Business, and eSchoolNews.

Curtiss Barnes leads Oracle's industry strategy team for Higher Education, Not-for-Profit Research Institutions and K-12 Education. In this role, Curtiss brings more than 20 years experience in the education industry. He is responsible for establishing product strategy and development investment priorities across all of Oracle's product groups, as well as identifying new market opportunities across the globe for Education-specific applications. Curtiss also serves as a liaison to Oracle's Education & Research Strategy Council (ERSC) and the Higher Education User Group (HEUG) - the world's largest user group in the Higher Education industry.

Prior to Oracle, Curtiss was director of industry marketing strategy for Education at PeopleSoft in Pleasanton, CA. He has also held roles in strategy and business development at SCT in Malvern, PA and directed the product management group at Campus Pipeline, Inc. in Salt Lake City, UT. Prior to joining the corporate world, Curtiss held positions in alumni and corporate relations, development and admissions at a number of higher education institutions.

Curtiss holds a bachelors degree in economics from Clark University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Lexington, MA with his wife Julie and daughters Emily, Julia and Caroline.

David Ernst is Chief Technology Officer at California State University (CSU) where he directs academic-administrative- and communications-technology activities across a 23-campus system. Previously he worked to develop and implement a system-wide strategic plan that integrated academic and administrative technology. David also worked at the University of California-San Francisco as Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Information Technology & Services. He also served as director of administrative information systems at Stanford. Earlier in his career he built an independent consulting practice geared to higher education in the areas of strategic information technology planning and organizational restructuring. David earned both a B.A. and J.D. at the University of California-Davis.




Photo of Joel Greenberg Joel Greenberg, Ph.D.
Joel Greenberg is the Open University's Director of Strategic Development, Learning and Teaching Solutions. He has a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Manitoba, an MSc in Control Engineering and a PhD in Numerical Mathematics from the University of Manchester. He joined the Open University in 1978, initially as a Software Designer developing educational software applications. He is currently directing the work of a team of media specialists and technical staff on a number of projects which continually reassess the design, development and delivery of learning media products. He is also responsible for key production and information systems activity which underpin both strategic developments and core media production. He is directing a number of new initiatives as part of the University's growing use of its new virtual learning environment as a primary delivery medium. Current projects include the development of a new learning content management system for the Open University's learning and teaching materials, the new virtual learning environment built on open interoperability standards and the University's Open Content Initiative. He has written and published extensively about computer animation, multimedia developments and new learning and teaching models at the Open University and been invited to speak at a number of international conferences.

Ray Henderson Ray Henderson
Ray Henderson is the Chief Products Officer for ANGEL Learning. Previously, Ray was President of the Central Media Group for Pearson Education where he was responsible for thousands of internet based product offerings, used by millions of students annually. In addition, he was responsible for ensuring that Pearson content and educational software tools play seamlessly across a range of educational delivery systems. Ray's other credits include the Safari digital textbook initiative, of which he was a founding board member. Ray's previous experience was at eCollege.com as Chief Technical Officer, and as Vice President of Internet Services and Strategy Group at Simon & Schuster Higher Education Group.




Bob Alcorn
Bob Alcorn is Chief Software Architect for the Blackboard Academic Suite. He brings over 10 years of experience in the design and construction of eLearning systems, and is instrumental in defining the technology strategy of one of the market leaders in eLearning. In addition, he has been an active participant in the eLearning standards community, contributing to specifications such as IMS Learning Tools Interoperability, and IMS Learning Enterprise Services


Dr.LendoDr. Arthur J. Lendo, President and Professor of Management, Peirce College, Philadelphia, PA

Dr. Arthur J. Lendo has been President and Professor of Management, Peirce College, Philadelphia, PA since 1991. His 15 year tenure places him among the most experienced (top 10%) college presidents in the country. He shepherded the College through a charter change from two-year to baccalaureate status; established the successful Peirce Corporate College; and created the acclaimed Peirce Online which offers accredited degrees completely online. The College is now an international institution with degree-seeking students enrolled from 43 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands and 30 foreign countries.

President Arthur J. Lendo has received numerous awards during his 38-year career. Dr. Arthur J. Lendo holds a B.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, M.Ed. from The American University and Ph.D. from Boston College as well as certificates of advanced graduate study from Harvard University, The Aspen Institute, and Oxford. His professional background includes administrative and faculty positions at The American University (DC), Boston College (MA), Northeastern University (MA), and Saint Joseph's University (PA) plus Fortune 500 technology experience with Sperry UNIVAC (now UNISYS). He presented a major policy paper at Oxford University in July 2004 regarding asynchronous online learning which received wide distribution.


Sebastian Vos,Vice President of eEducation, Elsevier

Sebastian Vos is the Vice President of e-Education for Health Sciences Division of Elsevier. The Health Sciences Division is a $1 billions global publisher of books, journals, and on-line resources for physicians and healthcare practitioners and students. Sebastian has responsibility for academic e-learning within the health sciences markets. Prior to this, Sebastian was the Vice President of Strategy and Development for the Health Sciences Division.

Prior to joining Elsevier, Sebastian was a Managing Director at Handshake Dynamics, a boutique management consulting firm specializing in Media strategy. Prior to that, he was a Principal Consultant in PricewaterhouseCoopers? Information, Communications, and Entertainment Corporate Strategy Practice. He was also an Internal Consultant for The Timberland Company, and before that an Internal Auditor for Group Bull. Sebastian received his M.B.A. with Honors from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University, and a B.S.B.A. from Boston University in Finance and Marketing.

Dr. Mark R. Nelson,Digital Content Strategist, National Association of College Stores

Mark R. Nelson is digital content strategist for the National Association of College Stores (NACS). He joined NACS in 2005 in this newly created role which focuses on education in addition to strategy development and implementation. He is also a research fellow for the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR), where he has participated in their research agenda since 2003. Prior to joining NACS, Dr. Nelson was a faculty member at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY where he held a joint faculty appointment in the Lally School of Management and Technology, and the Information Technology Program in the School of Science. While at RPI he received awards in both teaching and research. Prior to RPI, Dr. Nelson worked as a senior higher education management consultant for a division of Renaissance Worldwide, and as Special Assistant to the President for Technology at Saint Michael's College. In the latter role, as part of a two-year commitment to his undergraduate alma matter, he helped define the CIO position and fulfilled many of those responsibilities prior to the formal creation of a CIO position. Earlier stages of his career included responsibilities and experiences that crossed the higher education environment in a range of technology-associated roles.

Dr. Nelson is currently an active presenter across the U.S. and Canada on a range of topics. His areas of expertise include digital content delivery, information technology (IT) leadership, innovation and emerging technologies, and technology management in higher education. He also has expertise in public sector technology management, large-scale IT project management, why IT projects fail, and how organizations and industries respond to technology-based change. Dr. Nelson earned his Ph.D. in Infomation Science and his MBA with a concentration in Marketing from the University at Albany, SUNY. He earned the Distinguished Dissertation Award in 1998 for his work on cross-functional integration and the ability of IT departments to deliver solutions that meet organizational needs. He received his BS in Computer Science from Saint Michael's College in Vermont where he recently established a scholarship for students interested in studying management information systems or the application of technology to any other discipline.


Dr. HwangDr. Dae-Joon Hwang, President of KERIS -Korea Education Research and Information Service

Dr. Dae-Joon Hwang has been serving as the president of KERIS (Korea Education Research and Information Service), a leading Ministry of Education-affiliated organization in the educational and research field since July 2004.

Over past twenty years he has been actively working as an expert on computer architecture (dataflow machine design), parallel processing, multimedia framework design, CSCW, cyber education system, and intellectual property right management. He also has more than 20-year experiences in both doing research and teaching students in Korean Universities. He has been with the faculty of School of EE & CE, Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea since March 1987. During the period of Feb. 1997 - Jan. 2004 he took in charge of Provost of SKKU Information and Communication Center and also he served as Provost of Admission. In addition, he spent one year as a visiting professor at MIT and four months as an invited researcher at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY, U.S.A. And also he served as an exchange professor at University of California, Irvine, U.S.A. (2001.3-2001.8)

Dr. Hwang has extensive experiences in Cyber Education. During the years 1998-2001, he consulted on cyber education for Ministry of Education and Ministry of Unification of Korea government. At the same time, he worked as a chairman of Planning and Administration Committee of Open Cyber University and his effort contributed to OCU's earning the reputation as a leading cyber university during that time. And also he served as one of national evaluation committee members on ICT utilization in primary and secondary schools for more than four years. He was actively involved as a board member of IVILLE Int'l Inc., in LA, U.S.A., and IVILLE SOFTWARE Inc. in Seoul, Korea, which were co-founded based on his Korean and U.S Patents on cyber education system and platform technology in September 1998. He invested his time about 2 years as a research staff of the committee of Education and Research of World Trade Center Association to design Cyber Education Platform of World Trade Center University operated by WTCA in NY, U.S.A..(1998.9-2001) Especially he recognized as one of the expert with dignity on e-learning and regarded as a key person who paved a way of adopting cyber education into Korea. On recognition of the activities and contributions, he received the Presidential Award from Korean Government in June 1999.

Dr. Hwang earned his bachelor's degree in Computer Technology from Kyung Pook National University, and his master's and doctoral degrees in Computer Science from Seoul National University.

 

ValverdeLlorenç Valverde , Vice-rector of Technology at the Open University of Catalunya (UOC)

Llorenç Valverde is the Vice-rector of Technology at the Open University of Catalunya (UOC), a fully online university with more than 40.000 students, several undergraduate and graduate degrees and a PhD program on Information and Knowledge Society (IKS). He is also a tenured Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence full professor at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) since 1989.
Professor Valverde has conducted extensive research in Artificial Intelligence, some of it during his stays at the University of California at Berkeley and  some other other universities and research centers. He is a member of the Editorial Committee of several scientific publications in the field.

More recently, his focus has been in the  IKS area, assessing companies and institutions such as the Government of the Balearic Islands and the Council of Mallorca, and helping them define and develop strategies for IKS.

Professor Valverde has been the Head of the Computer Science Department at the UIB from 1995 to 2004. He has also been the technical director of the digital edition of the journal  Diari de Balears (1998) and, during 2005, he was the executive director of FOBSIC, a Foundation dedicated to the Obervation and monitoring the IKS in Catalunya. He actively collaborates with several media, has a weekly column on technology issues on a newspaper and has published two books on the subject.

At the Open University of Catalunya (UOC), he leads several teams in the design and development of e-learning technologies as well as being responsible for setting the direction and leading all technology resources at the University.

 

Ross Mackenzie

Dr. Ross Mackenzie, Product Development Manager, Learning & Teaching Solutions, Open University

Ross Mackenzie is a Product Development Manager in Learning and Teaching Solutions at the Open University.  He has a PhD in Physics, an MSc in Physics of Materials and BSc in Physics from University of Bristol, and carried out post-doctoral research in Materials Science at Cornell University and at University of Oxford.    Ross joined the Open University in 1995 as a software designer and has contributed to the development of a wide range of online learning and teaching systems.

He currently leads the teams responsible for the development of the University’s Virtual Learning Environment and of the OpenLearn platform which is used to deliver the Open University’s open educational resources.

 

Toru IiyoshiDr. Toru Iiyoshi, Senior Scholar, Director of the Knowledge Media Laboratory (KML), The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
Toru Iiyoshi is a senior scholar at The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching [http://www.carnegiefoundation.org] where he serves as the director of the Knowledge Media Laboratory. At the Foundation, he leads research and development efforts that take advantage of emerging technologies to enable educational institutions, programs, and faculty to transform the knowledge implicit in effective practice into ideas, theories, and resources that can be shared widely to advance teaching and student learning. Dr. Iiyoshi also works with various national and international initiatives and organizations in an advisory role to provide vision and leadership in the development and diffusion of innovative use of technology in education. He is a co-editor of the Carnegie Foundation book, Opening Up Education (MIT Press) and holds a visiting professor appointment at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at the University of Tokyo.

 

 

Liam ChungMr. Liam Chung, Chief Operating Officer, Embanet ULC

Mr. Cheung is the Chief Operating Officer Embanet ULC a provider of comprehensive elearning solutions to its higher education partners. Embanet provides the full range of elearning services to its partners including marketing, admissions, student services, course development, technology hosting and support as well as providing funding to develop elearning programs to our partners. Mr. Cheung manages the course development, technology and business development departments based in his 17 years of experience managing high growth companies.

Prior to Embanet, he was employed by Penson a financial services company for 5 years as a Senior Vice President responsible for global strategic development including mergers, acquisitions, and new initiatives for their clearing and technology subsidiaries. Mr. Cheung was also President of a financial e-learning and technology company for 5 years prior to Penson. Mr. Cheung has degrees from Boston University (MSM) and University of Waterloo (BMATH), is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries and holds the Certified Financial Analyst designation.

Duncan Lennox, Principal, blurgl Inc.

Duncan Lennox has 14 years experience as a technology entrepreneur and consultant. His background is a mix of software engineering and the various facets of running a technology business. Over the years his roles have included Sales, Marketing, Product Development, and Evangelism.

Mr. Lennox is the founder and Principal Consultant of blurgl, Inc. a consulting company that provides CTO For Hire services to companies primarily in the areas of learning, collaboration and content management technology.

Prior to blurgl, Mr. Lennox spent over a decade as a board member and Chief Technology Officer of WBT Systems, an enterprise e-Learning software company based in Waltham, Massachusetts, and Dublin, Ireland that he co-founded in 1995.

Mr. Lennox wrote the original prototypes of the TopClass Learning Content Management System together with co-founder and friend Eamonn Webster.

Mr. Lennox's primary roles were promoting the strategic benefits of e-Learning, as well as managing the long term product roadmap. He has worked with a diverse group of clients from CEOs on down and from Fortune 500 companies and across the spectrum to smaller organizations with less than 10 people. His role also allowed him to work with industry analysts, journalists and other vendors as well as to speak regularly at conferences on e-learning strategy and technology.

Before WBT, Mr. Lennox was a software engineer and researcher in high-speed networking, distributed learning, and software analysis and design. He wrote accounting software for Mac OS.

Mr. Lennox was born in Dublin, Ireland, where he also went to school, getting a Computer Science degree from University College Dublin. He currently lives just outside Boston, Massachusetts with his wife and daughter.

Rick Tomlinson, Product Marketing Manager, Jenzabar’s Internet Campus Solution (JICS) and Learning Management System (LMS)

Rick Tomlinson is Product Marketing Manager for Jenzabar’s Internet Campus Solution and Learning Management System at Jenzabar, Inc. in Boston, Massachusetts.  Rick has over twenty-five years of experience in higher education as a faculty member, administrator, and consultant.  In addition to his many years teaching in both classroom, online, and hybrid courses, he has held senior management positions on several campuses in the areas of information management, instructional technology, and academic affairs.

Rick earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration and an M.S. degree in Psychology from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.  He has also completed post-masters and doctoral course work in counseling, management, higher education leadership, and adult education at West Chester University, Widener University, and Temple University.

JOhn Harwood John T. Harwood, Ph.D.
John Harwood Senior Director, Teaching and Learning with Technology, Penn State. John is responsible for the development of courseware, training, and support programs for faculty and teaching assistants who seek to integrate technology and teaching. At University Park, he is responsible for helping faculty use technology in teaching; university-wide IT training; and computer labs, technology classrooms, and the support services required to support teaching and learning in those spaces, including instructional design and multimedia services. John is Penn State's representative to the CIC, the academic consortium of the Big 10.

 

Murray Leach Murray Leach
Murray Leach is a senior manager in New Zealand’s Ministry of Education with the responsibility for developing ICT strategies, frameworks and solutions that enable education sector-wide collaboration. As one of the partner representatives on the e-Framework Partners Group Murray is at the forefront of New Zealand’s education sector international ICT involvement.

Murray is also the chair of the New Zealand Education Sector ICT Management Committee - a group whose vision is to raise achievement in an innovative education sector, fully connected and supported by the smart use of ICT. Murray is also the chair of the New Zealand Education Sector ICT Connectivity Committee – ensuring that the education sector has access to a robust, open standards-driven ICT infrastructure for education. His involvement in these, and other forums, places him in good steed to contribute to the continued growth and development of ICT to support education, research and educational administration in New Zealand.

Murray has been a teacher and curriculum director in a secondary school, a consultant on education reforms in a number of Asia/Pacific jurisdictions and is presently responsible for the NZ ministry of Education involvement in standards and specifications for education and training.

Murray has an MA in Geography from Otago University.

Shimizu Professor Yasutaka Shimizu
Prof. Yasutaka Shimizu is the President of the National Institute of Multimedia Education, which was newly reformed from Government Institution to Independent Administrative Institution from April in 2004.
He graduated from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1964, and received Master and Doctor of Engineering degrees from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1966 and 1971. Since 1969 he worked at the Tokyo Institute of Technology as Research Associate, Associate Professor and Professor. From 1994 to 1998 he was Director of the Center for Research and Development of Educational Technology (CRADLE). He was the Dean of the Graduate School of Decision Science and Technology in 1998-2000.
In 2001, he retired from Tokyo Institute of Technology and he is Professor of Emeritus.  After then, he has been working as Director of Educational Resources Research Center at National Institute for Educational Policy Research of Japan, under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for developing National Information Center for Educational Resources (NICER) which is the national portal site for all learners and educators.  Dr. Shimizu is currently President of the Japan Society for Educational Technology.  He has also been contributing to several councils and task forces in MEXT.
He was elected an IEEE Fellow “for contributions to research and development in the field of educational technology, electromagnetic compatibility, and surface acoustic waves” in 1994. He received Educational Minister’s Award for contributions to engineering education in 1999 and Post-and-Telecommunication Minister’s Award for contribution to computerization in education in 2000.

Herman A. Serrano, Senior Solutions Manager-Academics, Campus Management Corp.
Herman A. Serrano is Senior Solutions Manager for Academics for Campus Management Corp., responsible for CampusLearning’s strategy, direction, enhancements, and advisory council. Herman previously worked at Blackboard as a Senior Consultant in Global Services providing training, consulting services and strategies to clients on adoption of learning systems, content management and portal systems. Prior to Blackboard, Herman worked as Chairman of Computer Science and Director of Computer Services at a high school in the northeast and also served as Director of Computer Services for Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Business School integrating technology into the curriculum.

Tim Gilbert, SVP & CMO, Campus Management Corp.
Tim Gilbert is Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Campus Management Corp., responsible for its software and services ecosystem strategy, analyst relations, customer advisory boards, and industry partnerships. Tim worked previously at IBM, marketing of its life sciences solutions for drug discovery research solutions to universities and pharmaceutical companies. Prior to IBM, Tim worked in consulting in Washington D.C. where he produced business strategies for Bell+Howell mail and messaging technologies, Dana Corporation automotive systems, Gieseke & Devrient smart cards, and other global brands. Tim holds degrees from University of Wisconsin-Madison (BA), Johns Hopkins University (MA), and Regis University (MBA).



Chris Moffatt Chris Moffatt
Chris Moffatt is currently a Principal Program Manger in the Education Strategy, Products & Solutions Group at Microsoft working on tools and applications designed to enable the education community to create and deliver rich, interactive learning experiences. Chris has worked at Microsoft since 1990. Prior to joining the Education Group, Chris worked in Microsoft Research, where he led the team that developed ConferenceXP, a research platform for investigating advanced collaboration, multi-institutional instruction and distance learning. Prior to joining Microsoft Research, he worked as a program manager in the SQL Server and Microsoft Learning Technologies product groups, as well as with Microsoft Consulting in South Africa
