Compare the benefits of Contributing, Affiliate and Alliance membership by using our Membership Matrix
There are four complementary reasons:
There are three options for participation and official membership.
IMS Contributing Members are the strategic partners of IMS GLC, providing about 95% of the organization funding. Contributing members show true industry leadership by subsidizing all the resources required for development and adoption of IMS standards and other work around the world. IMS Contributing Members are also the “voting” members of IMS. IMS is legally organized as a non-profit “member association,” meaning that the members have voting representation in IMS. The majority of IMS Board of Directors must come from contributing member organizations and be elected by the contributing members. The contributing members also serve on the IMS Technical Advisory Board, which votes to charter IMS projects and to approve the work products of those projects as published documents. Contributing Member organizations also typically lead the IMS project groups and activities – using their high level of commitment to establish movement in the market toward positive change. They also have full access to all IMS project group products in progress. Organizations interested in participating at this level are encouraged to view more detailed information on IMS Contributing Membership. Joining as a Contributing member requires approval of a membership application.
Affiliate membership is a low cost, non-voting membership in IMS GLC. It is the best place to start your interaction with IMS and support of the IMS mission if your organization has limited resources to participate at the current time. For organizations with limited resources Affiliate membership provides an incredible return on investment, as it provides early access to all IMS work in progress and a close connection to the IMS community. And, you have the option of joining as an Affiliate immediately online!
Affiliation provides an environment for developers and end-users to collaborate on tools, techniques, trials, and conformance of distributed learning products, content, and delivery systems. If you are a product or service company implementing or using IMS specifications you are strongly encouraged to join as an IMS Affiliate to indicate your support for open specifications development. In return IMS provides tools to make implementation of the specifications much more productive and effective and will update you directly on any changes or improvements as they occur.
Affiliation also enabling broad participation in the activities of IMS GLC by end-user organizations, such as, such as educational institutions, school districts, and the training or human resources units of corporations for the sharing of best practices in learning technology innovation and adoption.
Affiliate organizations have early access to standards under development and all alliances, such as the Common Cartridge & Learning Tools Interoperability Alliance.
